My story
Hey I’m Aj, the founder of Bert’s Beans! Coffee has always been the thread that connected my life — from early mornings in the military to long days teaching abroad and exploring new cultures. No matter where I was in the world, sharing a cup of coffee opened doors, sparked conversations, and created community in places far from home. Those moments showed me how powerful a simple cup can be in bringing people together, grounding us, and reminding us that we’re all more alike than we think.
Then came three words I'd never thought I'd hear at 28 years old, "You have cancer." Those words halted my plans and pushed me to rethink what truly mattered. In that pause, my family and community showed up for me in ways I’ll never forget, reminding me how powerful it is to be supported and truly seen. Their love and support made me understand that the people around me were my foundation — the ones who lifted me, grounded me, and helped me find clarity in what mattered most.
Bert’s Beans was born from that reflection. It is a way to weave together my passion for good coffee, coastal adventure, and community. Every roast is a reminder of resilience and connection, supporting communities that supported me. Bert’s Beans isn’t just a roastery; it’s a tribute to the people, places, and moments that shaped me, and to the good that can rise even from the hardest chapters.
